Some of these quotes you may have read before, but I’m hoping you’ll find a few that are new to you. As I mentioned before, this list will continue to grow, especially if you share your favorites in the comments below.
Also, for a few of the authors I included a fun fact or two that you may or may not have known. I think context always gives their words more meaning.

George Eliot is actually the pen name of Mary Ann Evans who was an English novelist, poet, journalist and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era (1837-1901).
She used a male pen name so she would be taken seriously and escape the stereotype that women’s writing was limited to lighthearted romances.

Isabella Bird was a nineteenth-century English explorer, writer, photographer, and naturalist. Due to suffering from several illnesses, including depression, her doctor recommended that she travel. Her father gave her some money, and off she went to America and Canada.
She traveled all over the world including Japan, India, Middle East, and wrote several books about her travels. She became a household name due to the popularity of her books. Some of her books are:
- “The Englishwoman in America”
- “A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains” published in 1879
- Unbeaten Tracks in Japan
She lived to age 72, which goes to show that traveling is good for your health.

Oprah is a household name, but here’s a few things worth noting. Oprah is a billionaire philanthropist.
According to Forbes magazine, Oprah was the richest African American of the 20th century and the world’s only Black billionaire for three years running. Life magazine hailed her as the most influential woman of her generation. In 2005, Business Week named her the greatest Black philanthropist in American history.
